The Q Boom Box SBR: Big Performance in a Small Package

When Q announced they were building an SBR in 8.6 Blackout, experienced shooters knew something special was coming. The Boom Box isn’t just another short-barreled rifle—it’s a purpose-built tool that delivers the terminal performance of a .338-caliber projectile from a package that’s barely over 31 inches long. At 5 pounds 8 ounces, this rifle handles like something much smaller, but hits like something much bigger.

What Makes This SBR Different

Most SBRs compromise somewhere—either they’re too heavy, too loud, or they sacrifice too much ballistics for the compact size. The Boom Box solves these problems with smart engineering. The 8.6 Blackout cartridge was designed specifically for short barrels, maintaining velocity and energy where other calibers fall off. The closed-bolt semi-auto action provides reliable feeding and consistent lockup, while the M18x1.5 thread pitch with AI-style .338 compatibility means you can run a wide variety of suppressors without adapters. This isn’t a chopped-down rifle—it’s a purpose-built system where every component works together.

Texas-Ready Performance

Here in Texas, we need firearms that work in our environment. Whether you’re dealing with feral hogs that need stopping power, or you want a capable home defense rifle that won’t over-penetrate through walls, the Boom Box delivers. The 12-inch barrel keeps the overall length manageable for vehicle use or tight spaces, while still providing enough velocity to make the 8.6 Blackout perform as intended. The hard coat anodized finish stands up to Texas humidity and rough handling. At dallasshooters, we’ve seen enough rifles come through our shop to know when something’s built right—this one is.

NFA-Regulated Firearm — ATF Form 4 Required

This is a short-barreled rifle (SBR) regulated under the National Firearms Act. Purchase requires an ATF Form 4 transfer, a $200 federal tax stamp, and approximately 30–120 days of ATF processing (eForm 4 is typically faster than paper). The firearm ships to a licensed FFL/SOT dealer of your choice; you take possession only after ATF approval.

SBRs are currently legal to own in most U.S. states. They remain prohibited or restricted for civilian possession in California, New York, New Jersey, Washington D.C., Hawaii, Iowa, Rhode Island, and Washington State. Check your state and local law before ordering. By placing an order you affirm that possession is lawful in your jurisdiction and that you are 21+ with no prohibiting factors under 18 U.S.C. §922(g).

3 reviews for Q Boom Box SBR — 8.6 Blackout Short Barrel Rifle

  1. Mike R. (verified owner)

This thing hits like a truck. Took down a 250lb hog with one shot. The balance is perfect—not front heavy like some SBRs. Worth every penny and the NFA wait.

  2. Sarah T. (verified owner)

Impressed with the build quality. The anodizing holds up to Texas weather. Recoil is manageable for the power. Only complaint is ammo availability, but that’s improving.

  3. James L. (verified owner)

Ran it suppressed and unsuppressed. Threads are perfect, no alignment issues. Light enough for all-day carry when hunting. Q built something special here.
